Silent printing is a feature within the system which allows StoreFeeder to send invoices and labels directly to your printer.

There are two methods of setting up silent printing. If you are one of the lucky few who are already using our SF Connector windows app, the instructions for setting up silent print are different to how they are here. If this is the case and you would like specific instructions then please contact one of the support team who will be able to help you.

Silent printing is based on the user credentials and we set up printers based on this information.  This does mean, however, that if you regularly move desks, or access StoreFeeder away from your office, silent printing may not always work

Setting up Silent Printing with Adobe Reader 11 or below

The first thing to do is to check how you are rendering the exports in the browser.

Firefox

  1. Click on the orange Firefox menu in the top left hand corner of the screen.
  2. Expand the options menu item and then click on options.
  3. Once the new window has loaded, click on the applications icon in the menu bar at the top of the window.
  4. Scroll down until you find the content type of Portable Document Format (PDF) and then click twice on the action item on the right hand side.
  5. This should bring up a drop down list of the available installed programs which can open PDF files.
  6. If it is not already, change this to Use Adobe Reader.
  7. Once this has been changed, click on the action item again, but this time scroll down to Show Application Details and click on this option.
  8. Locate the item in the list called AcroRd32.exe and make a note of the file path, which should show just above the ok button.
  9. Click cancel, and then click ok on the options window.

Now that we have the browsers set up correctly, you will need to get the printers to be recognised by StoreFeeder.

This is done by going into your users details page by following Settings => Company=>Users and then clicking on your e-mail from the list which loads.  Then on the menu on the left hand side, click on printer settings and then click the get printers button.  This should then prompt you to save a file with the extension .vbs.  You may receive a warning about the type of file being harmful to your computer.  Click ok and then once you have saved the file, double click on it to run it.

Running the file will open a new browser tab and ask you to log in. If you enter your normal log in details and click login, once the page has loaded close this new tab and return to the tab where you have downloaded the file from.  You will now need to refresh the page, and when that has finished, click on the printer settings tab on the left hand side.

You will notice you should now have a selectable list of printers to decide which you want to use for which action.  The actions are fairly self explanatory, the only slightly confusing bit is having the A4 printer option set up.  So set the label printer dropdown to your label printer name and then do the same for the remaining 2 items and then click save.

Once this is done click the back to users button on the left hand side. You now need to tell StoreFeeder you have successfully set up your printers, which can be done by clicking on warehouse management => Dispatch mode.  When the page is finished loading, change the 2nd toggle down i.e. the one labelled when printing invoices or picking lists, close the pop up window automatically, to on and then click save.

There is one final task to complete before you have completely set up silent printing, which involves saving a file into the correct location on your computer.  To access the file you will need to contact support, who can e-mail it over to you.

Once you have received this file you will need to place it in a specific location within your computer.  You will need administrator permission to copy the file, we got part of the location earlier on when checking the browser was set up correctly.  In general it will be in the format of C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\, obviously this may vary depending on the version you are using and the file structure of your computer.

Either follow this folder path or copy and paste it into a file explorer window and then double click on the Javascripts folder.  This is where the file needs to be saved. When you are saving the file you will need to do change the file type to All files and then remove the .txt off the end so the file name reads exactly StoreFeeder.js.

Setting up Silent Printing with Adobe Reader DC

With the release of the latest version of Adobe Reader (Adobe Reader DC), there are some small changes you will need to make to continue using the silent print feature in StoreFeeder.

If you are already using silent printing, then please navigate to the installation location of Adobe Reader. This is generally “C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader” (However, please see the note below).  Once in this folder, double click on the “Javascripts” folder then right click the StoreFeeder.js file located within and click on copy.

Once you have marked the folder for copy, navigate back out of the Adobe reader file back to C:\ProgramFiles\Adobe.  Then  double click on the Adobe Reader DC file, then double click on the "reader" folder, then the "Javascripts" folder.  Once in this directory right click on any white space and click "Paste".  This will then complete the copy of the file from the old directory to the new directory.

If you have already set up Firefox to work with Reader DC, there is no further action required, the silent printing feature should work as normal.

If, however, you have not amended your browser, or the silent printing still does not work, then please follow these instructions.

Firefox

  1. Click on the orange Firefox menu in the top left hand corner of the screen.
  2. Expand the options menu item and then click on options.
  3. Once the new window has loaded click on the applications icon in the menu bar at the top of the window.
  4. Scroll down until you find the content type of Portable Document Format (PDF) and then click twice on the action item on the right hand side.
  5. This should bring up a drop down list of the available installed programs which can open PDF files.
  6. If it is not already, change this to Use Adobe Reader DC.
  7. Click ok on the options window.

From these instructions you should be able to seamlessly continue using silent printing, if you do encounter any further issues, please raise them as soon as possible.

With this saved you will be able to start using Silent Printing directly on your account.
