Metafield support in Storefeeder comes in two parts. SEO fields (Meta Title and Meta Description) work automatically for every Shopify store connected to Storefeeder — there's nothing to switch on. Syncing custom product fields as metafields is an optional extra.

What are metafields?
Metafields are Shopify's way of letting you attach extra, custom information to a product — beyond the standard title, description, and price. They're often used for things like SEO details, extra product information, or data your theme or apps use to display something special on your storefront.
What works out of the box
Every product listing you manage for Shopify in Storefeeder has a Meta Title and Meta Description field, found on the listing's details page. These are the fields search engines like Google use to show your product in search results.
- Fill them in on the product listing in Storefeeder, and they're sent to Shopify automatically whenever the listing is updated.
- If you edit them directly in Shopify you will need to redownload the listing in StoreFeeder for us to get the changes.
Sending your own custom fields as metafields
If you use custom product attributes in Storefeeder — extra fields you've set up yourself, beyond the standard ones — we can send these to Shopify as metafields too, so that information is also available on your Shopify product pages and to your theme or apps.
We have a guide on how to create and update product custom attributes here: Creating and Updating Product Custom Attributes
This isn't switched on by default. It's an optional feature, and our support team needs to enable it for your account before it will start working. If you'd like to use it, contact Storefeeder support and we'll get it turned on for you.
A couple of things worth knowing once it's enabled:
- Shopify only allows metafield names up to 30 characters. If one of your custom attribute names is longer than that, it won't be sent.
- Custom fields currently only flow in one direction — from Storefeeder up to Shopify. If you edit a custom metafield directly in Shopify, it won't be pulled back down into Storefeeder.
- StoreFeeder creates metafields in the namespace "StoreFeeder" and we will only update metafields in that namespace also. This means we won't interact with any metafields that already exist on Shopify. This means if you are using a custom app that relies on metafields to do something that app will retain full control of the metafields they use and need.
