Creating Warehouse Zones, Stock Location Aisles and Stock Location Levels – StoreFeeder

Warehouse Zones, Stock Location Aisles and Stock Location Levels let you classify your Stock Locations (bins) so you can organise picking, reporting and stock control around how your warehouse is physically laid out. This article explains what each one is, how to create them individually, and how to create them in bulk using the Import Create/Update Stock Locations tool.

Important - how these fit together: Warehouse Zones, Stock Location Aisles and Stock Location Levels are three separate, optional classification fields you can apply to a Stock Location — they are not a nested "Zone contains Aisles contains Levels" hierarchy. A Stock Location Aisle can optionally be tagged to a Warehouse Zone, but a Stock Location Level is only ever linked to a Warehouse — it cannot be linked to an Aisle or a Zone.

Structure at a glance:

Warehouse — the top-level container. Every Zone, Aisle, Level and Stock Location belongs to exactly one Warehouse.
Warehouse Zone — a named area within a Warehouse (e.g. "Fast Movers", "Cold Storage").
Stock Location Aisle — a named aisle within a Warehouse. Can optionally be assigned to a Warehouse Zone.
Stock Location Level — a named shelf/level within a Warehouse. Cannot be assigned to a Zone or an Aisle.
Stock Location (the bin itself) — can be tagged with any combination of a Warehouse Zone, a Stock Location Aisle and a Stock Location Level.

Note: Stock Location Aisles and Stock Location Levels are only available on accounts with the Multiple Stock Locations and Aisles & Levels features enabled. Warehouse Zones are available on all accounts. If you can't see the screens described below, contact Support to check your feature settings.

Creating a Warehouse Zone

Go to Settings > Warehouse Management > Warehouse Zones.
Click New Warehouse Zone.
Select the Warehouse the zone belongs to.
Enter a Warehouse Zone Name (required, up to 250 characters).
Click Save.

Zone names must be unique within a Warehouse (not case-sensitive), but the same name can be reused across different Warehouses.

Creating a Stock Location Aisle

Go to your Warehouse's Stock Locations screen.
Open the Stock Location Aisles tab.
Click New Aisle.
Select the Warehouse.
Enter an Aisle Name (required).
Enter an Aisle Order (required, a number — this controls the order aisles are picked in).
Click Save.

Aisle names must be unique within a Warehouse, and Aisle Order must be a number greater than 0. The manual create screen does not let you assign the aisle to a Warehouse Zone at the same time — that link can only be set via the Import Create/Update Stock Locations tool (see below).

Creating a Stock Location Level

Go to your Warehouse's Stock Locations screen.
Open the Stock Location Levels tab.
Click New Level.
Select the Warehouse.
Enter a Level Name (required).
Enter a Level Order (required, a number).
Click Save.

Level names must be unique within a Warehouse. As noted above, Levels are not linked to Aisles or Zones.

Creating Zones, Aisles and Levels in bulk (Import Create/Update Stock Locations)

If you have a lot of Stock Locations to set up, you don't need to create every Zone, Aisle and Level manually first. The Import Create/Update Stock Locations tool can create new Zones, Aisles and Levels automatically as it processes your spreadsheet — as long as you switch on the option to do so.

1. Getting to the import tool

Go to your Warehouse's Stock Locations screen.
Open the Import Stock Locations tab (headed "Import Create/Update Stock Locations").

2. Preparing your file

Accepted formats: .xls, .xlsx, .csv.
Maximum file size: 5 MB.
Include a header row — you'll map each column to a StoreFeeder field on the next screen, so column names in your file don't need to match exactly.

3. Choose Create or Update

Choose whether this import will Create new Stock Locations or Update existing ones (Update is the default). This choice changes which columns are required — see the table below.

You can also switch on Continue On Error. With it off, a single invalid row stops the whole import; with it on, valid rows are still imported and only the failing rows are rejected.

4. Map your columns

For each column in your file, choose which StoreFeeder field it maps to:

*Only available on accounts with the Multiple Stock Locations feature enabled.

The "Create New Items" toggle: When you map the Warehouse Zone, Stock Location Aisle or Stock Location Level column, you'll see a Create New Items option (default: No).

No (default) — the named Zone/Aisle/Level must already exist for that Warehouse. Any row naming one that doesn't exist yet is rejected with an error.
Yes — if the named Zone/Aisle/Level doesn't already exist for that Warehouse, it is created automatically as part of the import.

Matching is not case-sensitive and is scoped to the Warehouse named in that row — the same Zone/Aisle/Level name can exist in more than one Warehouse, but not twice within the same Warehouse.

Good to know when auto-creating Aisles: if the import creates a new Stock Location Aisle for you, it is not automatically linked to a Warehouse Zone — even if your spreadsheet row also has a Warehouse Zone value in it. Aisle Order for auto-created aisles is set automatically (highest existing order in that Warehouse, plus one). If you need an Aisle tied to a specific Zone, create or edit that Aisle manually afterwards.

5. Run the import and check the results

Once mapped, submit the import. Every import run — successes, failures and which fields were mapped — is recorded on the Stock Location Import History tab on the same screen, so you can check what was created or updated and review any errors.

Quick summary

Warehouse Zones, Aisles and Levels are independent, optional tags you can put on a Stock Location — Aisles can optionally sit under a Zone, Levels cannot.
Create them one at a time from Settings > Warehouse Management > Warehouse Zones (Zones) or the Stock Locations screen's Aisles/Levels tabs.
To create many at once, use the Import Create/Update Stock Locations tool and switch on Create New Items for the Warehouse Zone/Aisle/Level columns — otherwise the import expects those to already exist.
Auto-created Aisles are never automatically linked to a Zone, even when both columns are present in the same import row.
